Council Proceedings Summary
Disarmament and International Security Committee
Council sessions were a blast as countries came up to discuss the issue of disarmament of nuclear warheads. Following council roll call, delegates were told to come up and give an opening speech of 45 seconds. Delegates all came up to give further context of the nuclear situation globally, and voiced their country's’ stance and concerns regarding the possession of nuclear weapons, with DPRK specially raising up the point of defence and deterrence as a reason to possess nuclear warheads.
Moving on, we proceeded to council sessions. The first council session provided a foundation for the delegates to grasp who are potential allies with a similar aim. The delegates also set the agenda and went forward with a moderate caucus on “Why should we disarm?”. Topics discussed in the second council session included “how do we punish the aggressive use of nuclear warheads’ where the delegate of UK raised economic sanctions and cutting off humanitarian aid, which was met by arguments that some countries may be self-sufficient to the extent that economic sanctions will not affect that greatly.
Some countries raised their concerns over the feasibility of complete disarmament, opting instead to reduce nuclear stockpile gradually, which was passed in the resolution and will be enforced with harsh economic sanctions. Overall, it was an indeed fruitful session as delegates were able to compromise and pass a resolution.
